Link Phuket, a promising startup in the Phuket real estate domain, recently found itself entangled in the intricate web of diverse data sources. Our data ecosystem included a multitude of elements, such as property listings, market trends, data obtained from government land offices, information ingested from third-party partners, and a vast repository of customer data and transaction histories. Unfortunately, this wealth of data was scattered across various platforms and databases, creating a labyrinth of complexities.

With experience and insight, we foresaw how data fragmentation could lead to several challenges. We believed that data duplication would be a prevalent issue, as the same information was stored in different locations, which we believe would no doubt lead to inconsistencies and data quality problems, not least cost. Additionally, we belived that the disparate nature of our data landscape could cause latency issues, making it arduous to provide clients with timely and accurate information. For a startup like Link Phuket, this challenge was particularly daunting, as efficient data management was crucial to gaining a competitive edge in the fiercely competitive real estate market.

Not only do we have to source property listings and put people into homes, we have to also be technology visionaries.

To add to the complexity, data from various sources needed to be integrated and harmonized to provide a comprehensive view of the real estate market in Phuket. The integration of land office data, third-party data, and internal transaction records required a robust and unified data infrastructure.

We also factored cost into the decision-making process and drew up a Request for Information (RFI) like matrix in Excel to help us understand key requirements and how the technology satisfied our needs and to what extent. We considered our organizational Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) rating, which we rated as Low, as well as cost and effort, and landed on Serverless Data Processing, NoSQL integrations, and Elasticsearch.

In our pursuit of data accuracy and completeness, Link Phuket embraced cutting-edge technologies to streamline our data operations. Notably, we leveraged serverless data processing solutions, taking inspiration from platforms like AWS Lambda and Google Cloud Functions. These serverless compute services allowed us to process data in a pay-as-you-go manner, eliminating the need for heavy upfront infrastructure investments.

These services played a pivotal role in Link Phuket’s data unification efforts. By harnessing the power of serverless functions, we achieved remarkable flexibility and scalability in our data processing pipelines. To address the diverse nature of our data sources, we seamlessly integrated NoSQL databases into our data architecture. These NoSQL databases became integral components of our data management strategy, offering the agility and scalability required to handle the complexities of the real estate domain.

The applications of NoSQL in Link Phuket’s data journey were diverse:

  • Data Ingestion:
    • Utilized serverless functions, including AWS Lambda and Google Cloud Functions, for seamless data ingestion from various sources directly into our NoSQL database. Whether collecting data from web applications, external APIs, or other data sources, the integration with NoSQL streamlined this process.
  • Data Transformation:
    • Leveraged serverless functions for crucial data transformation tasks before storing data in our NoSQL database. Tasks included data cleansing, enrichment, and format conversion to ensure high data quality.
  • Real-time Processing:
    • Tailored our NoSQL database to support real-time data processing, seamlessly integrating it with serverless functions. Enabled us to process incoming data streams and update the database in real-time, critical for the dynamic real estate market.
  • Data Querying:
    • Leveraged the robust query capabilities of NoSQL databases, employing serverless functions to retrieve and manipulate data as needed. This combination of serverless compute and NoSQL databases empowered us with responsive and scalable data access.
  • Event-Driven Architectures:
    • Utilized serverless functions and NoSQL databases as key components of our event-driven architectures. When events like data arrivals or user interactions occurred, serverless functions responded by processing data and interacting with the NoSQL database, ensuring real-time responsiveness.

Our goal was clear: to unify our intricate data landscape into a seamless, efficient, and responsive system, akin to what larger organizations had achieved with Lakehouse architecture. To be clear, we don’t operate a Lakehouse architecture because we don’t have the budget, but we wanted to get as near to Lakehouse architecture and functionality as we could, given our constraints.

Practical Solutions:

  • Consolidation is Key:
    • We opted for a single Lakehouse like architecture, creating a central repository for all real estate data. This eliminated data duplication and provided a holistic view of our business, enabling valuable insights from property listings, customer interactions, market trends, and more.
  • Build Once, Use Everywhere:
    • The ‘build once, use everywhere’ philosophy ensured data consistency and reliability. Data insights were easily accessible to clients, business partners, and government agencies, enhancing data accuracy—a critical factor in real estate.
  • Technology Matters:
    • Strategic investments in cutting-edge tools like Elastic Search accelerated data processing, analysis, and visualization. These technologies expedited data-driven decision-making and enriched customer experiences.
  • Set Milestones:
    • We tracked progress meticulously, using milestones as a navigational compass. This approach motivated the team and ensured the timely completion of the project. Milestones also quantified the return on investment and the tangible impact of our data efforts.
  • Continuous Improvement:
